In Hamlet, the women act the small roles portraying their historical status at the time. Although Gertrude is the Queen of Denmark and Ophelia is the prince’s lovers, they have no standing in the society and their voices are never heard. Their actions and fates are greatly influenced by the men’s decisions. All their lives Ophelia and Gertrude are led by the men’s power; they together make a weak image of dependent women at Shakespeare’s time. Although Gertrude and Ophelia are not well developed through out the play, their actions, language and influence on the play portray them as the obedient passive type of women. Gertrude is Hamlet’s mother, a queen who betrayed her husband and got seduced by the prince’s uncle Claudius. She remarried with him and thereafter obeyed every order from Claudius. Gertrude is objectified by Claudius, as he said: â€Å"my crown, mine own ambition and my Queen.† To him the queen is one of his possessions and not even listed as the first. This suggested Gertrude is used by Claudius to get to the throne. The hasty marriage only a few weeks after her husband’s death shows her great dependence on men. Hamlet’s proclamation that he will â€Å"speak daggers to her, but use none† illustrate that he perceives her to be inferior, weak enough to fall foul to his words. Overall, Gertrude is the type of women that cannot survive without a man in her life, with suc h a weak soul she betrays her own husband and son. Ophelia is different from Gertrude. She is innocent, and naà ¯ve with no experience in life. She does love Hamlet with her pure heart, but she is also too submissive to her dad Polonius and brother Laertes. As they claim Hamlet is dangerous, that Hamlet’s â€Å"will is not his own† and that she should â€Å"fear† him, she does not try to oppose him, or justify Hamlet’s â€Å"affections† instead she tells Laertes that he â€Å"shall keep the key† of her memory. Polonius insults her and Hamlet’s love, responding to her declaration that Hamlet â€Å"has of late made tenders of his affection† he cries â€Å"Affection? Pooh!†¦Do you believe his tenders as you call them?† to which Ophelia replies â€Å"I do not know, my lord, what I should think†. She gives all the other male influences in her life. Later in the play, after Hamlet killed Polonius and runs away, Laertes is in France, she has no one to turn to. She depends too much on those people, now without any support she turns to  madness and finally commits suicide. All her life Ophelia is led by others and has never decided anything but her death. â€Å"Hamlet† was written in a time when women were not even allowed to play themselves on stage, women were seen as inferior and women were ‘owned’ by men. Ophelia and Gertrude have no real Autonomy, they are at the mercy of Hamlet, Claudius, Rodrigo, and Laertes moods to define their moods, and when the men are in conflict the women suffer, which is death in this case. History Essay on Ephraim Hanks Essay Example History Essay on Ephraim Hanks Paper History Essay on Ephraim Hanks Paper What does a blacksmiths apprentice, a seaman, a scout, a soldier, a pioneer, a wild-west mail carrier, a healer and a patriarch all have in common? They are all positions held by Ephraim Hanks. He was a wild-west renaissance man. It seemed as though there was little that Ephraim could not or did not do during his lifetime. The west during the 1800s hyperbole was reality. Men were eight feet tall and ate trees. Heroes were ten feet tall and ate rocks. Literary license was how every story was told and the romanticized deeds of the well-known were merely the honesty of heir times. As stories passed from one person to the next embellishment was as important as any of the details. Any person studying history must simply accept the stories passed down at face value. Much of what is written about Ephraim Knowlton Hanks falls into this category. Ephraim Hanks was born on March 21st 1826 in Madison, Ohio. Ephraim Hanks was the eighth of twelve children born to his parents Benjamin and Martha from 1812-1832. His father was a blacksmith and a tool maker. His mother devoted all of her time to raising the twelve children on the family farm. Ephraim was somewhat of rebel rouser in his youth and was constantly stirring up trouble. His parents were firm protestant Christians who had no issue with taking the rod to a disobedient child. Ephraim certainly received his fair share of whippings as a boy. His petulance was only made worse by the fact that young Ephraim was not too keen on religion. He did nearly everything he could to avoid having to go to church. He was able to find one silver lining about the Sabbath. Any time he was caught misbehaving on the Lords Day, when he would normally get the belt, his father would refrain on account of it being the Sabbath. His Sunday beatings were always postponed till Monday. This did nothing to improve his loathing of Sundays. At the very young age of sixteen Ephraim Joined the United States Navvy and sailed aboard the U. S. man o war Columbus. In the short time that he was in the military he traveled much of the world, including spots in Europe and Africa. He returned home in late 1844 to his home in Ohio only to find that his father had died. Ephraim had enough older siblings to keep the family farm running even in the absence of his father. Ephraims brother Sidney had also returned to assist with the family esponsibilities after the death of his father. Sidney had Joined the Mormon Church which caused plenty of friction between Sidney and his mother. She even went so far as to invite a couple of local preachers over to talk some sense into Sidney. Ephraim who had never been one for religion deigned to stay out of the fray until one of the visits by the preachers. During the after-dinner conversation which centered on religion one of the preachers laid a particularly hostile insult at Sidney. Ephraim responded by rising and dismissing them from the home. In no uncertain terms he et the preachers know that no one would insult his brother in their home as long as he had a say in it. Sidney was grateful for his brothers protective nature and shared the story of his conversion to the Mormon faith with his brother Ephraim. It was a heartfelt testimony of a miraculous healing. Something in Sidneys story moved Ephraim and he began to read the book his brother had given him, The Book of Mormon. His mother could barely stand one Mormon let alone two and both brothers were quickly banished from the family farm. Ephraim began the next chapter of his life as he headed west in search of the Mormon Church leaders. When Ephraim caught up with the Mormon Church leaders he met Brigham Young. The tale goes that Brigham was at a social event with Ephraim and called him over. Ephraim was a little more than stunned that the Mormon prophet even knew who he was. Then Brigham asked him to do something strange. He was told to shave his beard (it was common for men of this time period to have beards). Ephraim was puzzled but complied immediately. After dutifully shaving his beard and grooming his handsome mustache he returned to the party. Brigham immediately summoned Ephraim over and asked him why he did not shave his mustache. Ephraim understood and returned to shave his entire face, a look which was typically only seen on prepubescent males. Brigham was heard to have said to the other brethren, now theres a man I can trust. By 1847 Ephraim had volunteered for the Mormon Battalion. He worked mostly as a scout. In the early 1850s Ephraim was transporting mail from the Great Lakes states to the far west. He rode alone and did so no matter the season and no matter the weather. He was a fearless example ofa true frontiersman. Up to this point he had not seen much action as a soldier. In the winter of 1856 Brigham Young asked for volunteers to go nd rescue the Willie-Martin handcart company which was struggling across the plains and suffering heavy loss of life due to starvation, disease and death from exposure. This adventure became one of the defining moments of the life of Ephraim Hanks and the experience propelled him into legend. Ephraim departed hundreds of miles behind the handcart company not knowing how far the company had advanced or what the exact state of company might be when he caught up to them, if he caught up to them. His small group had a wagon full of supplies and food along with some horses to expedite the Journey. But they were in a race against time. Early October snows were taking their toll on the diminishing Martin-Willie company who was now almost completely out of food and many of its members were without shoes. Unfortunately these were not uncommon circumstances for pioneers crossing the plains. After a couple of weeks of pushing hard, the snows became heavier and some of the members of the rescuing group began to talk about going back. Ephraim told them they were welcome to make their own choice but that unless he received word from the prophet (Brigham Young) he would continue on with his mission. This was not the last of the problems for the rescue group. Shortly thereafter the wagon hauling all the supplies broke down. Ephraim loaded all he could on the horse team from the wagon and carried as much of the supplies as he could forward. Within Just a few days Ephraim came across a couple of riders coming from the opposite direction. They had dropped off the meager supplies that they had and were continuing on in search of the rescue party. They informed Ephraim that the handcart company was only a couple of days ahead of him. Ephraim sent them on to catch up with those of the original rescue group who headed back east after the wagon broke. The trouble for the handcart company as not simply one of food and supplies but also of manpower and health. The young healthy rescuers could provide assistance and aid with vigorous strong able bodies. The nearby location of the company was Joyous news but the report also brought some ill-omens too. The handcarters were completely bereft of food. Though Ephraim had taken all he could when the wagon broke down he had to leave many of the basic raw food items behind (like cornmeal, flour and most of the meat). The legend says that Ephraim, knowing the direness or the situation, knelt in prayer and asked God for meat to feed Handcart Company. Within minutes of his prayer he came a across a lone buffalo struggling through a deep snow drift. This was an extremely rare occurrence to find a solo buffalo in this area at this time of year. To Ephraim Hanks this was a miracle directly from God. Ephraim shot the buffalo and butchered it taking as much of the meat as possible to feed the handcart company when he arrived. Before sundown the following day he caught up with the Martin- Willie company. Droves of emaciated starving pioneers swarmed Ephraim and his few horses. He stood in shock and gratitude and handed cold buffalo steaks to the embers who wept with gratefulness and commenced to eat without making any effort to cook the meat. Later it was relayed to Ephraim that one of the leaders of the company had prophesied only a few days earlier that the Lord would send them an angel would feed them with buffalo meat. It is hard for most of us to imagine the kind of living horror show that many of the pioneers endured on the trek westward. People boiled shoes for soup. People lost toes, fingers and ears to the cold. Many wore only rags on their feet because their shoes had long ago worn through. Over the course of the next several days Ephraim pent most of his time engaged in a grisly work. He dug graves and buried the dead, he nursed the starving and amputated frostbitten limbs that had turned black from the severe cold. Those of faith say that Ephraim raised a widows dead husband and healed the dead black feet of an English immigrant who was an accomplished dancer. At the Martin-Willie handcart reunion even 50 years later the members spoke of a dance the Englishman did after being healed as the moment which gave the pioneers the hope they needed to finish their voyage. After the rescue of the Martin-Willie company Ephraim went back to delivering the ail overland for a few years. During this time he took on the responsibility of being a stationmaster for a Pony Express station along the route westward. He used his outpost to facilitate Mormon pioneers moving from east to west across the plains. But this was not the end of the fantastic adventures of Ephraim Hanks. In the late 1850s Ephraim was called to fight in the Echo Canyon Wars. He was promoted to the rank of captain and served with distinction and honor. The tall tales of Hanks did not subside either. One of the stories goes that some of the soldiers fighting on his side were captured. Ephraim was tasked with leading a rescue operation. When he arrived at the location where the prisoners were being held he was not satisfied with Just freeing the prisoners. He insisted on, and succeeded in rescuing not only the soldiers but also their horses and even the mules! It seemed as though there was not anything that Ephraim Hanks could not do. Later in the 1860s he was recalled to Salt Lake City and fought in the Blackhawk Wars. In between, he began his life as a businessman. By the 1860s the eastern half of the county was gearing up for the Civil War. Ephraim was in his forties and his life was slowing down. His slowing down would be high adventure for most of us. He bought a trading post and began to run his own business. He prospered and his venture was only interrupted by his call to serve in the Mormon Battalion in the Blackhawk wars. It seemed as though Ephraim was an unmitigated success at anything he did. Throughout his life he always felt his primary responsibility was to God. He unflinchingly served the Mormon Church over the course of his life. Ephraims last years were filled with stories of him serving as a patriarch and enown healer among the Mormons of the Utah valley. Even in his old age church members would send riders dozens of miles to have Ephraim come and bless their sick or injured family members. One of the last accounts of him had him riding hard to reach a farmhouse where he had been summoned to bless a mans sick wife. When he arrived he was informed by a dour husband that he was too late and his wife had passed. Ephraim asked them to clear the house and proceeded to bless the woman. GSM based Wireless Notice Board 2.2 BACKGROUND The use of scrolling display boards for advertisement is becoming common these days at various shops, shopping centers, railway and bus stations and other such places. It is becoming an effective mode for communicating with the public and providing them information. The issue with such displays is when frequent updating of the messages is required. It becomes inflexible, time consuming and a technician needs to go to that location of display board and plug the computer to it and then update it. it doesnt give the flexibility to change the message from any remote place. Another issue is with the placement of display boards, it cannot be placed at any place due to its complex and delicate wiring. 2.3 To overcome such problems, I designed a GSM based Wireless LED notice board. It is basically a display system that uses real time noticing, b sending messages through mobile phone in the form of SMS. In such system, there is no requirement of reprogramming the code to update or change the message that needs to be updated as the whole process is based on wireless technology. A multiplexing method is used to drive the LEDs. And the power requirement for display module is also reduced. 2.4 OBJECTIVES I aimed to develop a moving sign board which can be controlled by the user by sending a SMS. The user can change the scrolling/display message immediately unlike the old device which requires personal attention at the location using a desk bound device like PC or laptop. My project will let user update it even from a remote distance. Once the message is displayed and is in use, it gets deleted from the system memory to allow new updates to be stored and making space for upcoming SMS. Also, I wanted to design a model which has reduced complexity and simplified hardware and wiring requirements. 2.5 Wireless technology is an upcoming technology, due to this reason I planned a project based on it. It implements the wireless communication between a mobile phone and a display board. It uses a combined feature of microcontroller and wireless technology to construct an accurate and effective communication system.   The user makes use of a simple GSM based mobile handset which will help in sending messages for display purpose via SMS to various display boards. A GSM modem is used at the receiver end which detects and receives upcoming new messages. Proper coding is set in the microcontroller which gives AT commands to read the SMS that is received from the modem and is then stored in the microcontroller. 2.6 The nature of my project initially was research and survey based along with problem solving. I had to consider the safety issue and fast track transmission of the information. The duties I was required to perform are: I had to divide the project in smaller parts and assign time-duration for each task. I was involved in intensive research and analysis based on the topic of interest for my project. I had to perform survey on various microcontrollers, peripheral devices for e.g. LCD, transmitter and receiver circuits, GSM and many more based on the need of the project. I projected a schematic diagram with the help of ORCAD software. I designed the PCB layout. After having the PCB layout I was required to make the hardware structure. Which was followed by writing the code for the working of the device. Lastly, it involved preparation of report and presentation for the entire project. It was my duty to keep my project guide updated with the progress of the project. 2.7 PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING ACTIVITY To begin working on my project, I started studying topics of interest and related to my project. After processing and analyzing the information found based on my survey, I started designing the block diagram for my project. I used ORCAD software to design the schematic diagram. It was a new software for me, so it took time in understanding its functions and tools. I structured my drawing in such a way that the project focuses on the transmission of textual data through air interface with the help of GSM through asynchronous serial communication. When a unique pass key is entered, the data gets displayed on the LCD. Also, it will receive and accept data from dedicated and registered user only by performing address matching. 2.8 Various components that were used are described below: Power supply I used a step-down transformer of 230V primary to 5V secondary voltage that would give a power supply of +5V. This circuit also provides a variable 12V supply to the motor drivers. GSM Modem    in the receiving section, it consists of a slot which holds the SIM card. The SIM stores the messages that are sent by the user. It works on single supply voltage of 3.4V 4.5V. Max232 level convertor it is a dual driver or receiver which acts as an interface medium between the microcontroller and the modem. Microcontroller I used the 89S52 microcontroller which is a 40-pin powerful controller which consists of several features. It provides a special feature of data signal and clock signal which is required for scrolling the messages. 648 LED dot matrix it is formed by wiring multiple LEDs together in rows and columns. It is done so that it minimizes the number of pins that are required to drive them. Each character is displayed by scanning of either rows or columns. Shift register IC74LS154 it is a high speed 8bit Serial-In Parallel-Out shift register. I have made use of shift register to minimize the number of I/O pins that would be used to drive the column of LED matrix. Crystal 11.0592MHz such high value crystal helps in reducing the flickering effect that is seen in the LEDs. 2.9 After finalizing the components, I went ahead to connect each component to the PCB. After laying out the PCB me and was shown to my project guide for any improvement possibility and to get feedback on it. After getting the final confirmation from my supervisor I connected the components and completed the full hardware structure. The next task was writing the code for its functioning. I prepared a flow chart to follow a well-defined path while writing the code. I used keil Microvision software to write my code. It develops a HEX file which can be loaded into the microcontroller. I wrote my programming code in Embedded C language. I divided my working in two parts, so the code was written in two parts. 2.10 The display process begins by writing 0 on all rows. This will result in blanking out of all LEDs at the beginning. The microcontroller uses ASCII code for each character that must be displayed. It uses this value to access the corresponding display pattern in a character look up table. The display will be sent out to the display shift register in serial manner. For but with value 1, the LED will be kept off and for bit with value 0, the LED will be kept on. This process gets repeated for first line of the other five display matrix. And thus, enabling the first pin. The same process is repeated for every row till all the rows are displayed. In row scanning, appropriate logic levels are set and passed to the columns and each row is selected for about 1ms time. Thus, creating a persistence of vision effect and the image is displayed as a still perceived image. The microcontroller uses and generated a HEX value for every character that needs to be displayed. 2.11 The second part involves scrolling of the message. This effect is achieved by defining seven display buffers, each of size 32 bits and stores the bit information of 648 LED in the matrix. The scrolling process for displaying the message begins from right to left. All the column values for all the rows are shifted to the left direction by giving a suitable volume of shift step. This will help to move the character from right to left. After successfully shifting of the character, the row values of next character are taken up. This is done after scrolling it for 5 time per character to accommodate many characters simultaneously. For every shift, the display buffer gets updated. Every character is shifted six times to fully load into the display buffer. Thus, the process continues until all the characters in the messages are loaded. After loading of each character, the message will continue to scroll until a new message is received. The microcontroller automatically stops the display and extracts the new message from SIM card on the arrival of new message. It then executes the above cycle for new display process which scrolls down the new message. 2.12 On completion of the software and hardware part of my project, I performed a test run on it to check the working of the project. On facing difficulties, I performed troubleshooting on the whole system and gave it a run again. Constant helped was received by my faculty members during any difficulty. Major problem faced by me was in completing the programming code of the model. As my projects main heart was the software. I referred many software books and coding languages to understand the problem and solve it. Another issue was related to the receiving the signal from the GSM module to the microcontroller. I thought the problem was in the GSM module, but on later evaluation of the problem, I came to know the problem was in the connection, the input pins for the microcontroller was mismatched and soldered in wrong place. To rectify the issue, I studied my circuit diagram again and soldered it to the correct place. 2.13 SUMMARY To conclude, my project explains each development step I took for designing the GSM based notice board by integrating features of all hardware components used. Each module is reasoned out and placed carefully, thus making the unit to work best. The speed of the display can be controlled through the software and the message is displayed as required. Keeping a good scope open for future use in various industries such as food industry, in trains, in educational institute etc. The project gave me a good experience in my own field. I developed many technical skills, managerial skills, and problem solving skills. I believe I made a good use of my academic knowledge that I had gained during my bachelors and applied it to my project. The project was successfully completed on time. If Mahatma Gandhi was alive today, he would have been disgusted with the present way of democratic government, functioning of public servants & would have died heart broken. If our freedom martyrs like sri.Bhagath Singh or Sri. The last two decades of the existence of independence, India has seen a steep upward trend in the graph of existing corruption. The media, the public, the variety of forums for discussions and debates for the higher intelligentsia are all neck deep buried in highlighting the rampant corruption in every sphere. In this debate the rural folk are also not far behind. These days they are also very well aware of the malpractices in the highest of levels of all places. So much so that now, the average Indian has reached the highest level of disgust and disappointment at the way things are moving in this country. Let us first of all understand what is meant by corruption and corrupt practices. In brief, anything that is below all standard norms of morality in a country, is called or defined as corruption and corrupt practices. These norms are a fixed standard in any given society, and when these are broken we say that, a society is getting corrupted. This corruption as we see it today is not a development that has come overnight, it has been a continuous process for the last several decades and, to – day it has seeped into the very blood stream of the system. What we have to study next is, why and how this monster of corruption has taken such a firm hold on India so much so that, the country of the legendary Harischandra, the honest has reached the position of one of the top ten or so of corrupt countries of the world. This is no mean achievement, and has taken a few decades to fructify. It is not that, corruption did not exist earlier, it is not that to – day there are no honest people, then why do we all yes, I say all feel that, corruption is rampant everywhere and all the time. This is because of the simple reason that this malady has spread through the entire length and breadth of our social fabric and gone down to the deepest levels. How has this come to be? Would be quite a pertinent question. The corrupt practices have now become our lifestyle to such an extent that, we do not seem to feel that there is anything wrong in what all we are doing., and that things should not be as they are. We, on the contrary are inclined to justify all wrong saying that, without doing wrong we cannot exist or be functional. When we start thinking that corruption is a must, then I feel that the situation has reached a point of no correction. This present apathy shows how far the degradation of  our values have reached, and how low the system has dipped. When we start justifying all the wrongs we do, it is the beginning of the end., as, we are not only doing wrong, we are at the same time thinking that it is correct, then where can the scope be for correction? It would be rather interesting to note and specify as to how this process of continuous degeneration started, for it is the root that grows into a magnum tree. It is thus of great value to know who put the seed that grew into this poisonous tree. In this connection, it is understand that, this degeneration started from the top echelons of society, and then percolated downwards, without a hurdle. Who is at the top or the apex of our society? It is the set of people who have all the power that is invested in them by, us the people. Now, it is for the goodwill of this top layer of society to give the country’s society the trend it deems fit. Now, this layer at the top has been the politician who rules the country, and to say that the seeds of India’s corruption were sown by this class of our society, which has been at the helm of affairs of the country and today they have brought us to this point of no return as far as corruption is concerned. Where are politicians like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and above all, the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi? It appears that India has stopped producing men and women of such integrity. Perhapse the breed of such politicians and other men have stopped taking birth. Where is that erstwhile political party, the Indian National Congress, that loyally fought for the freedom of the country, where is the discipline to follow the clarion call of Mahatma Gandhi? All it seems to have been lost, and the same Congress that fought against foreign rule and ousted the foreigners is now all set to install a foreigner as the head of Independent India. What has all this come to, what can be the implications of a foreigner as the head of the state seem to be lost to this Congress which worked to oust the foreigners – what a degradation of values. Have we Indians lost all self respect that we ourselves invite a foreigner to rule us? I dareasay we have become so immune to all finer feelings that we do not mind doing anything as long as we meet our ends. All this is the ugliest face of the corruption in India. All our ethics, our self respect and love for our motherland is lost somewhere in the last fifty years. Today we are standing at the threshold of a new millennium with, the eerstwhile Indian National Congress and many other parties without a single leader of stature. What does this show that, in the span of more than century, Congress has failed to produce a single leader, leave alone a leader of the stature of Sardar Patel and the like. Today the sets of politicians of all political parties are just money spinning actors just working to establish estates for their seven generations. The vision of a great India in the yes of the freedom fighters has been lost somewhere in our move in the last fifty years. When the oldest political party, the Congress presents such a dismal picture of honesty loyalty and service, what can be said or expected from the other much younger political parties. They are all bound to follow the footsteps of this erstwhile conglomerate of greedy money spinning politicians. Today, all the new political parties are following the path tread by the elder brother, the Congress, resulting in a mushroom growth of political parties all of the set pattern with no goals, no ethics, no ideals and no ideologies. This level being the highest level of our society is seen to have become most corrupt in the last two decades and the public is very well aware of the multi-scam decades of the eighties and nineties. Now, the scenario at the very top, can hardly allow for any space for any honesty to persist in any other layer of society. So, from this topmost layer, corruption has percolated to all levels and in all spheres of activities, and all this sure enough because it suits the politician. The politician has encouraged the bureaucrat to be corrupt, and in turn the bureaucrat has enjoyed the protection of the politician, in all his nefarious activities. From the senior bureaucrat the virus of corruption has slowly and steadily seemed down to the lowest levels of functionaries. This has become a totally corrupt and incorrigible institution. The Indian society in all its entirety is corrupt to the core, and now corruption is like a drug, without which the addict finds it difficult to survive. With this slow and steady and continuous spread of the fangs of corruption, today the situation is such that, there is no place or activity which is bereft of the fruits of corruption. Now, corruption has become our way of life and to uproot it is a Herculean task. The tentacles of corruption can be dealt with only with an iron hand, and above all, must start cleaning from the top echelons of society. However, as we have seen umpteen times, this does not happen. Our experience shows that, as soon as a big name is involved in any corruption case, there is a lot of hullabulloo for some time, and it all dies down with  the passage of time and the corruption continues unabated. How does this happen? This is very obvious for all those who have to be at the clearing end are bought, so, no damage can ever come to the so called high ups. This is the main reason why there is never any breakthrough in any scam. In this situation it will be a wonder if anything tangible can really be achieved for, the high ups cannot be touched, and the lower formations need not be touched – so we remain where we were at the beginning of any case. The scams which have come to light in last one decade have amounted to multi – crores, they are being dealt with but, it is so shocking that no politician has yet been punished for siphoning off so much of wealth of a poor country, what can be expected in a country when its protectors themselves become criminals. When the senior can not be punished how can there be any cleaning at the bottom. It would not even be fair to punish the lower rungs of the ladder when the higher rungs continue to bask in the sunshine of their riches. The way in which these cases are being dealt with clearly indicate that no one will be hurt as, all those, yes all those who matter are involved in corruption. So, at present, the situation is of â€Å"who will bell the cat?† Everyone knows who the corrupt are but, the irony of our system is such that no one can be touched. If this situation remains any longer, it is a wonder if there could be any light at the end of the tunnel. India is reaping what it has sown, and the seed of corruption has grown up into a full size magnum tree which perhapse cannot be changed, replaced or cut. It appears thus that for the time being at least, we have to bear with it. Only God can do some magic. Irrespective of the status of the wrong doer everyone, big or small, high or low, must be dealt with an iron hand, and that also at a fast speed. What is the use of just a show of dealings against corruption, while in reality all cases are just quietly shelved banking on the fact that, public memory is very short. All these cases are just a farce into which now, the Indian public an not be very easily fooled. They steal and they never stop to help others for it might mean the loss of their own lives. Chapter 5 notes The boys are finally captured and are nearly killed. Once again, new gunfire saves them and they run for their lives. These near misses make the reader feel like the boys are on borrowed time. Eventually, they will be captured for good or die. It seems inevitable. The idea that they have been awakened from a nightmare or a dream is very poignant. These are just young boys who have been forced by circumstances beyond their control to learn survival tactics when only days before they were growing up together and singing the rap music they loved. Chapter 6 notes This chapter is somewhat of a contrast to the violence of the war. Life continues to go on in the village of Kamator where Ishmael is reminded of life in his own village and how much his brother Junior loved him and cared for him. They were motherless misfits there, and now they are motherless misfits once again. Chapter 7 notes Ishmael is alone because he ran in the other direction from the village therefore making wind up all alone. Chapter 8 notes Ishmael is lonely and is not trusted by anyone and this just reinforces his loneliness and sadness. Chapter 9 notes It seems as if in some ways, the boys lead charmed lives and in others, they face nothing but adversity. They see the beauty of the ocean, only to be forced to walk on sand so hot it burns their feet terribly. They are cared for by a good, decent fisherman, only to be captured by villagers who fear them and want to kill them. Then, unbelievably, the cassette tapes save their lives once more. However, in the end, they desperately need the blessings the fisherman’s mother offered them. Chapter 10 notes In this chapter Ishmael meets some old school friends (Musa, Kanei, Alhaji, Jumah, Saidu and Moriba) in a village which makes Ishmael relieved. The gang find a dead crow and a couple decide to eat it since they are extremely hungry while the others decide not to. Saidu who is one of the ones that ate the crow predicts his own death and it comes true. They then come across an odd village with just one big house Ishmael even as he feels happiness as he learns that his family is to be found in the next village. Chapter 11 notes The most poignant aspect of this chapter is the irony of Ishmael finding his family only to lose them once more before he even can see them or say goodbye. His ability to escape capture by the rebels again is almost like the literary deus ex machina (god by way of a machine), a literary device that almost seems contrived. First, the boys arrive in a village, which seems to be acting normally and living life as they always have. Nowhere else are these hiring and recruitment challenges more apparent than in the city of Los Angeles (Lester, 2007). The LAPD, in terms of per capita, is one of the token big-city law enforcement departments in the United States. In spite of attaining a considerable lofty force strength of 9895 police officers in early 2009, or one police officer for every 388 citizens, LA is still significantly under-policed compared to other prominent cities such as New York, which has one police officer per 233 citizens, and Chicago, with one police officer for every 213 citizens. Since Los Angeles City spreads over more than 400 square miles, the Los Angeles Police Department is also fairly small in line with the geographic area of its power, with 21 administration points per square mile, compared to 118 administration points per square mile in New York City and 59 administration points per square mile in Chicago. The combination of melted cheese and tomato sauce with my favorite toppings all on a tasty golden brown crust is amazing and mouthwatering. The only thing that tops a great pizza is the feeling you get when the great pizza is a creation of your own. Every kind of pizza begins with the crust, but before you have crust you have pizza dough. The soft off-white pizza dough is very malleable. The dough feels cool in your hands as you shape it into a circle adding flour as you knead the dough, and of course there’s the tossing of the dough in the air and catching it which in my opinion is the fun part. After you have your pizza dough shaped and ready, you spread the ingredient that really sets off the pizza, tomato sauce. The aroma of tomatoes and spices blended together perfectly smell wonderfully, and the zesty and robust taste is even better when you have the perfect sauce. After you apply the sauce, you add a layer of cheese. Mozzarella is the usual choice for cheese as it complements the pizza rather well. Especially when my favorite pizza toppings are added which are pepperoni, sausage, and Canadian bacon. Together, the ingredients create an amazing pizza. The last step in creating a pizza is baking the pizza. Hearing the tempting sound of the cheese sizzling as it melts atop the sauce covered golden brown crust in the oven almost makes you want to take the pizza out early and devour it. Finally, when the pizza is baked, it’s time to enjoy the pizza and all its greatness. After taking a bite of a slice of the pizza you created you realize that it brings a sense of satisfaction knowing you created something so good. The smell of the fresh baked pizza, the taste of the toppings, cheese, and sauce after you create it creates a phenomenal pizza eating experience.
